NEWSLETTER

September 2008

The current Council is strongly united and committed to ensuring the provision of a high quality service to the communities of Yatton and Claverham. It has taken us a while to get back on track after the problems and internal disagreements of the past year, but those of us who remain are determined to put the past behind us and to move forward. This newsletter will be published every other month and will keep you up to date on the latest news.

New website

Our new website went on-line at the beginning of September. We aim to provide a comprehensive reference site for all our residents and visitors. It includes details of your nearest councillor, responsibilities, agendas and meetings.

The contents of this site will change regularly so please keep visiting us for up to date information in our Latest News section. The site is “under development” and comments and feedback are welcome. You can see the site at:

www.yattonsomersetparishcouncil.gov.uk

Car club

As a result of discussions between the Parish Council, Dragonflyermobility Ltd. and North Somerset Council, Yatton and Claverham will be getting their very own Car Club from September. A car club is a way of sharing vehicles and avoiding the hassle and cost of car ownership. Members of the car club book a car in multiples of one hour and pay for the time that they use and any additional mileage. One car will be at Yatton Village Car Park at Glebelands and one at Claverham Village Hall. The introductory price will be £3 per hour for your first 3 bookings rising to £4 per hour subsequently. This will include 40 free miles. Excess mileage will be charged at 12p per mile.  You will find contact details in this paper.

Burial Ground

Our current burial ground is running out of space, and may be full within two years. We are working in partnership with North Somerset Council to provide an additional burial ground which we hope will be in use by then. A potential site was identified some time ago and we will be re-visiting the proposal with local residents during the next few weeks before starting a wider consultation.

Grants awarded

In June 2008 the Parish Council awarded grants to the following organizations that provide services to local residents:

Claverham Youth Club £250 for start-up funds; the 2nd Yatton Guides £350 to support running costs; Yatton Music Society £200 to support a specific event; Vine Counselling; who receive referrals from local GPs, £350; and Yatton Methodist Church received £2000 to support the employment of a Parish Youth Co-ordinator for 12 months. The next round of awards will be made in October/November. If you think that your organisation might benefit please contact the Parish Office.

New Councillors

We are hoping to recruit new Councillors as soon as possible. You get no financial reward for being a councillor and will be held accountable by local people for things that happen locally, so why get involved? You almost certainly want to do something positive and, like most councillors, you hope to make a difference by influencing decisions that affect your community.

You will be one of a group of councillors working together to serve your community. Your task will be to bring local issues to the attention of the council, and help it make decisions on behalf of the local community. If you are interested please contact the Clerk to the Council, Richard Baker, on 01934 426473.

Looking to the future

We have already started work on providing a car club and a new burial ground. Other major projects include managing traffic to increase road safety; increasing the provision of public transport; promoting affordable housing for young people; and redeveloping Hangstones playing fields.

We are in discussions with North Somerset about providing bollards along the High Street to prevent vehicles mounting the pavement; about providing an additional zebra crossing and about restricting parking in the lay-by near the old Police Station.

Low cost and affordable housing will be a long-term priority to allow young people and families to live within the Parish. There are new initiatives that are being promoted that we want to take full advantage of.

Hangstones is a resource with massive potential. Through hard work and securing as much funding as possible we aim to make this a first class recreational area. We plan to hold a special Parish Council meeting at the end of September to explore as many options as possible – all are welcome to attend and contribute (details will be published on the Parish Notice boards, the web site – or telephone the Clerk for more information).
